  • Tithli Ben migrated to Delhi in 1969 at the age of 19 after marriage to Dumru Bhai, a mechanic working in a small workshop in Mehrauli in South Delhi. They settled in a small juggie near the workshop. Dumru Bhai was on contract, and used to get paid based on work done. Since it was a small workshop, the orders were few and the income was low.   Within 6 months of married life, Tithli Ben realized that to survive in a metro like Delhi, the small income that Dumru Bhai earns would not be sufficient. Like other women in the neighbourhood, Tithli Ben decided to take up domestic work to supplement their income. Her hard work made her a much sought after maid, and within a year she was able to secure work in 7 houses.   After 41 years of struggle in Delhi, Tithli ...

  • A ‘rights-based’ twist is what Sonia Gandhi, the Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance, gives to the achievements of the UPA I & II governments1, while announcing the second year report card of the UPA-II government to the people of India on May 22, 2011. She claims that the UPA-II government is building upon the approach of ‘providing legal entitlements to the people’. She goes on to list the entitlements granted by the government to the citizens. However, apparently in a deliberate omission; the right to social security for unorganised workers does not appear in the list, notwithstanding the fact that the UPA-I, at the fag end of their tenure, enacted ‘Unorganised Workers Social Security Act, (UWSSA) 2008’2, granting in principle, the universal right to social security for all unorganised workers in India.   The 2008 Act has been criticised widely for serious deficiencies - that it ...

  • “Preventing migration is against sovereignty; US could not have become the largest economy in the world without the labour of the Latin American workers in the United States,” declared C. Felipe Calderon Hinojosa, President of United Mexican States (Mexico) on 9 November 2010, at the International Convention Centre, Puerto Vallarta, when speaking to participants of the Civil Society Days (CSD) of Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD). “Capital and labour are like the left and the right legs; one alone cannot walk,” he reminded the US.   Latin American workers get a raw deal. “Migrants pay taxes ($53 billion in 2008) and these are much higher than the count of all public services they get from the US federal and state governments,” he pointed out, based on a study by BBVA Bancomer Research. He exhorted the US to take an approach of shared responsibility because “migration is ...

  • “Mexico is a country of migration, a land of mixed origin,” said Ms Margarita Zavala, Mexico’s First Lady, inaugurating the fourth edition of Civil Society Days (CSD) of Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) at the International Convention Centre, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico on 7 November 2010. More than 700 delegates, representing civil society organisations, trade unions, academics, lawyers and organisations of migrants from 140 countries of Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, South America and Australia, are attending the two-day CSD, conceived as civil society engagement with governments, on the issue of migration and development.   ‘Migration is the chief protagonist of today’s world; it is a human phenomenon and will be with us always,” said the First Lady, recalling the importance of migration to Mexican society.   According to the US Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, 11.4 million Mexican-born people lived in the United States ...
