  • Several hundreds of contract workers under the Indian Railways will stage a dharna at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on 10 May 2005 under the leadership of All India Railway Theka Kamgar Union affiliated to the CITU. The contract workers in various departments of the railways like conservancy and sanitary, engineering, catering and parcels from the eastern and north-eastern regions of the country is expected to assemble at Delhi for the dharna.   The main demands of the workers are: v      Regularisation of service v      Payment of departmental wages and facilities v      Social security benefits and continuity of jobs and employment of the contract workers in the event of change of contractors.   The dhrana will be followed by a public meeting. ...



  • Faced with a rising toll of occupational related deaths, injuries and sickness, the International Labour Office (ILO) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) marked 27 April, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, by highlighting the need for a preventative safety culture worldwide. According to new estimates by the ILO, the number of job related accidents and illnesses, which annually claim more than two million lives, appears to be rising because of rapid industrialisation in some developing countries.  What’s more, a new assessment of workplace accidents and illness indicates that the risk of occupational disease has become by far the most prevalent danger faced by people at their jobs accounting for 1.7 million annual work related deaths and outpacing fatal accidents by four to one.   • On 16 June 2013, we at Labour File received a message informing us about the shocking and sad news of the demise of Sri RA Mital, National Secretary of Hind Mazdoor Sabha (HMS). Mitalji, as all of us at Labour File fondly called him, was indeed a fatherly figure and a solid supporter of the work we were doing. We had opportunities to coordinate with him on innumerable occasions – from worker meetings, protests and demonstrations to labour conferences, ILO meetings and even fact-finding missions.   • On 23 October, the District Court of Gurgaon will take up the case of the 149 Maruti workers arrested after the incident of the management-workers clash on 18 July 2012. The episode also witnessed the death of Awanish Kumar Dev, the HR manager for the Manesar plant. The special investigation team (SIT) probing into the incident presented the chargesheet on 10 October and filed it to the same District Court of Gurgaon on 15 October. According to the supervising officer of SIT, DCP (South-East) Maheshwar Dayal, the chargesheet is around 3,000 pages and contains accounts of nearly 200 witnesses. About 149 workers have been accused by the police. An FIR has been lodged under Sections 147, 148, 149, 302, 307, 436, 427, 452, 332, 332, 353 and 114 of the Indian Penal Code.
